Outcrop Patterns of Non-planar Structures

Steven Dutch, Professor Emeritus, Natural and Applied Sciences,University of Wisconsin - Green Bay

Folds that are large compared to topographic relief usuallymaintain their distinctive patterns on geologic maps, but foldsthat are small compared to topographic relief may have verycomplex outcrop patterns. In extreme cases the folds may not berecognizable at first without some sort of geometrical analysis. The procedure for analyzing simple structures is to treat smallportions of the fold as plane segmentsA small anticline with strike and dip data.Local structure contours drawn and outcrop pattern constructed.
